ABSTRACT

The definition of a chemical peel is an application of a chemical agent that causes controlled destruction of the outer layers of the skin. The concept of treatment is to damage the skin that is deep enough to cause exfoliation of some of the layers of the skin but superficial enough to allow for regeneration from the appendage structures and papillary dermis (1). The damage to the outer layers of the skin induces superficial wound healing and is said to reduce scars, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, actinic keratoses, and lentigines. These properties of chemical peels using glycolic acid have therefore been used in the treatment of photoaging.
