ABSTRACT

In this chapter* we touch on the concept of green chemistry. We discuss the link between green chemistry and sustainability and give some examples.

1 INTRODUCTION

In the 1950s and 1960s chemistry was seen as the solution to a host of society’s needs and problems. By grace of the discoveries in the field of chemistry, we have many goods today, which we take for granted. The way to different polymers was paved by the discovery of Ziegler-Natta catalysis. Developments in the field of solid-state chemistry open vistas for integrated circuit technology and the current information technology boom. These days, large parts of computers and automobiles are synthetic and are of polymer origin. Simultaneously, chemical conversion of crude oil to gasoline, and other products, has helped economies around the world enjoy a level of unprecedented prosperity.
