ABSTRACT

The end of the Stone Age was not heralded by a sudden shortage of stones. Similarly, our society’s transformation to become sustainable will not be due to a sudden shortage of nonrenewables. Nontraditional sources of energy are becoming increasingly popular, and large investments are being made in a sustainable future. But what will the future hold? A definite answer will only be given once the future truly has arrived, but short of that, we can make some predictions based on current trends and speculate about the future of the chemical and energy industries.
