Ernö had already applied for British nationality in 1939 as soon as he had
achieved the necessary five consecutive years of residency. This resulted in a
notice being placed in The Times as early as 23 August 1939 (between an advertisement for Nescafé instant coffee and a begging letter from a woman
with cancer whose husband was unemployed and ineligible for dole money).
