ABSTRACT

In late 1968, I began work as a research librarian at Medtronic, Inc., a major manufacturer of medical devices, in particular, the implantable cardiac pacemaker. Late in that year, Earl Bakken, founder of Medtronic, approached me about a special project: collect the history of bioelectricity and electromedicine in the form of printed materials and original devices. This project eventually led to the establishment of a museum and rare book collection (1).
