ABSTRACT

Higher education in Israel comprises two major sectors: universities and “other institutions of higher education.” (This chapter does not deal with higher educational institutions in the West Bank and Gaza.) The seven existing universities are authorized by the Council for Higher Education (CHE) to award all types of academic degrees, while the “other institutions” provide instruction leading to professional bachelor's degrees in one specific field such as technology, administration, arts, or teaching. In addition to these two sectors, there exist eleven “regional colleges” (michlalot ezoriyot), which enjoy a special status and bear some of the characteristics of the other two academic sectors (CHE 1993).
