ABSTRACT
Bill Bauer and Hamisi Juma are not islands unto themselves. They and their land are linked to their neighbors, to kin, to communities, to institutions, to markets near and far. These linkages complicate their lives and livelihood, make them less secure as they depend on the uncertain actions of others, make them more secure as they spread their risk and draw sustenance from the mutual aid and efforts of others.
