ABSTRACT

Acute visual loss is an ophthalmic emergency that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. In the elderly, visual loss is nothing less than catastrophic, considering that many of these individuals have pre-existing physical disabilities, mental disabilities, or both. Consequently, the loss of sight in one or both eyes can significantly compromise their ability to function in society and diminish their quality of life. Age is the single most important predictor of blindness and visual impairment, with visual impairment being the second most prevalent physical disability observed among the elderly population (1).
