ABSTRACT

The Treaty of Rome (as amended by the Treaty of European Union), in the Preamble and Arts 2 and 3, sets out the objectives, and the activities necessary to achieve those objectives, of the European Community, which include ensuring the economic and social progress of Member States by common action to eliminate the barriers which divide Europe, the promotion of a harmonious and balanced development of economic activities, establishing a common market and the approximation of the laws of the Member States to the extent required for the functioning of the common market.
