ABSTRACT

What does the future hold for graduates of part time law degrees? From the data collected, it was clear that a desire to practise law was the primary motivation for almost 60% of the sample. Of this group, 75% wanted to qualify as a solicitor, and 23% wished to pursue a career at the Bar. One respondent, whose primary motivation for enrolling on the LLB lay in enhancing her present career, showed an interest in work as a paralegal. Of the remainder of the sample, 27% were hoping to enhance their existing careers through the acquisition of an LLB, while 24% expressed career interests in new or non-legal areas of employment. The diversity of options entertained by the Rutland Metropolitan sample might suggest an awareness of limited opportunities within the legal profession. However, the strong preference for entry into the profession may suggest that a high proportion of those students will be exposed to the ‘idiosyncratic recruitment policies’ ascribed to many law firms.38
