ABSTRACT

It may be that training contracts were allocated at different rates because of variations between groups in terms of their qualifications. The rate at which candidates secured a training contract certainly increased markedly with better qualifications42 and applicants’ academic profiles did vary according to a range of key characteristics.43 Academic differences were taken into account via a series of multivariate analyses which also identified other factors which continued to have an independent effect on applicants’ chances of securing a training contract. For reasons explained elsewhere,44 analyses were conducted separately for ‘early’ and ‘late’ offers. Early offers, defined as those received by applicants before they started the LPC, were considered on the basis of all members of the cohort who had applied for a training contract. Late offers, defined as those received by candidates after they had started the LPC, were considered on the basis of applicants who had not secured a training contract before they started the LPC.
