ABSTRACT

Some obvious, and even amusing, definitions have arisen as to what constitutes a vehicle for the purposes of police stop and search powers. The most well known are motor vehicles such as cars, vans, lorries, coaches, buses and motorcycles. As a result of case law, ‘vehicles’ have also included aircraft, hovercraft, ships, boats, rafts, trams, bicycles, horse-drawn carts, handcarts and trailers. The definition has even included perambulators and an empty poultry shed drawn by a tractor!14 In essence, it is assumed that a vehicle would be known when one saw it.
