ABSTRACT

For the fifth time, the TC Beirne School of Law of the University of Queensland participated in the prestigious Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The oral hearings were held at the Juridicum, University of Vienna, and at the International Arbitral Centre of the Federal Economic Chamber of Austria between 27 March and 1 April 1999. The goals of the Moot are described in Volumes II and III of International Trade and Business Law Annual ((1996) 2 ITBLA 229; (1997) 3 ITBLA 277). It suffices for the purposes of this Introduction to mention that the Moot facilitates the training of law students in principles of international commercial law, especially the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (Vienna Convention, 1980) and international commercial arbitration law. As in the past, the Moot involved an international sale of goods between companies located in the fictitious states of Mediterraneo and Equatoriana. The sale was subject to the Vienna Convention, 1980. The applicable arbitration rules were the American Arbitration Association International Arbitration Rules, 1993 (AAA Rules).
