ABSTRACT

There have been a number of attempts to produce treatises on the law of sports in recent years. As anyone who has attempted to write a general work in this area can attest, the task is a difficult one. Sporting activity crosses a complete range of legal issues, each of which raises its own complexity. Aside from the breadth of legal doctrine that a general work must cope with is the fact that much of what is interesting to readers is likely to be found outside the statutes and law reports. Added to the complexity of many of the legal issues is the fact that legal issues confronting athletes and sporting administrators are decided in a unique business and legal environment which cannot be comprehended without an appreciation of the context within which the issue to be decided arises. Finally, sporting activity is organised differently in different jurisdictions, thus making the production of any useful international work even more arduous and challenging.
