ABSTRACT

The doctor or midwife stands on the right of the pregnant woman, who lies on a couch with her head and shoulders slightly elevated. Care must be taken that supine hypotensive syndrome does not develop. The abdomen is observed, scars and other abnormalities are noted and the general outline of the pregnant uterus is felt. The top of the uterus is next identified (the fundus) and its distance is measured to the centre of the pubic symphysis (the symphysio-fundal height). Alternatively, a subjective impression of the size of the uterus is recorded.
