ABSTRACT

There are a variety of practices within the Commonwealth as to how committee reports are handled by Parliament and the government. In Jamaica, for example, all committees must report by the end of the year. It is reported that the government does listen to committee advice. On the other hand, governments in Australia do not tend to follow committee recommendations. British governments see the committees as an important way to communicate with the public. In cases where governments do not listen to committee advice, it may be dependent on how insistent and how independently minded the Private Members are. Private Members can press the government to listen and to act.
