ABSTRACT

In the Greek case 1969,692 suppression of political opposition was held by the Commission to breach the freedoms of association and assembly.

This covers public and private meetings, static ones and marches. As we have seen, in Ezelin v France 1991,693 the court found the conviction of a French lawyer for taking part in a demonstration was disproportionate. The right includes meetings held on the highway, but a requirement for notification or permission will not usually be regarded as an interference with the right: even a total ban on marches will sometimes be justified.694
