ABSTRACT
To have to stand trial on a criminal charge is in itself a very serious matter, even if you are sure of acquittal. Legal systems therefore may have a preliminary procedure to ensure that only appropriate cases proceed (apart of course from the ordinary investigation of the case carried out by the police and the prosecution service).
