ABSTRACT

When a university considers the option of or requirement for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), the library can take the opportunity to address a whole cadre of issues and responsibilities. Some of these include improving the quality and timeliness of access to information, maintaining the information server, and archiving. Students and faculty must be introduced to the library’s new information resource, students as authors must be assisted or trained in online publishing, and faculty can be assisted to change their workflow for the online editing of digital works. Faculty fears of publisher’s censorship can also be addressed. Some of these issues present new roles for libraries, and some require mapping traditional services and resources to digital resources and electronic services.
