ABSTRACT

A conflict’s suitability for mediation is assessed at each stage of the process by the mediators in consultation with the parties. A fundamental part of this is the assessment of the parties’ willingness to continue to participate. Mediators will usually look with each party at all the options including mediation, as well as the possible consequences of not dealing with the conflict. The problem often arises of one party being willing to continue while the other is not, and this will be discussed later in this chapter.
