ABSTRACT

Throughout this chapter we have looked at the nature of oppression, power and difference, and these can be the basis of many conflicts. They tend to disempower the people affected and it is important for community mediation services to address these issues. As a community-based organisation, a community mediation service must be seen to reflect the needs of all within that community. As a service that aims to take a neutral stance between the parties in a conflict, it needs to work to equalise the situation and be clear that the value of all people is recognised. Mediation can only work to empower people to take decisions about their own lives if it works to counteract the disempowering effect of discrimination and oppression.
