ABSTRACT
The pursuit of professionalism has been a conscious strategy for many of the predominantly female groups of health workers. The self-images of the professions stress their specialist knowledge base, their altruistic values and the legitimacy of their claim to self-regulation.1 This has proved attractive to nurses seeking to establish their credibility as a graduate profession, or at least one trained through higher education establishments, and enhance their status in the health services.
