ABSTRACT

In the last century, Prime Minister Gladstone made clear that the role of our Parliament was not to govern the country, but to call to account those who do govern the country. The House of Commons seeks to achieve this through three mechanisms. The first is accountability via debate, second is accountability via questioning and investigation and the final one is accountability via scrutiny of national finance. In addition to being aware of private bills and hybrid bills, you need to pay particular attention to public bills sponsored by the government.
