ABSTRACT

This chapter does not attempt to survey all the works of children’s film criticism published since 1895, which is clearly an impossibility. Some works get a fuller treatment than others and a further elaboration on individual theories of children’s film criticism like Marxism or feminism can be found in Part Four: Ideology. I simply survey the landmark works of children’s film criticism published in virtually every major film period since the silent era (1895-1927), and point out the broad critical, social, and cultural trends out of which those landmark works emerged. I want to take stock of the politics of twentieth-century children’s film criticism.
