ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to examine briefly the recent significant political developments in certain states in the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East that may have a bearing on the future of NATO’s Mediterranean Initiative. Economic and social issues of note in these states will be analyzed in the next chapter. The focus will be on those nonNATO Mediterranean states participating in NATO’s Mediterranean Initiative, excluding Israel and including Algeria-the latter not a member of NATO’s Mediterranean dialogue.
