ABSTRACT
The foregoing chapters have charted the history of Rhode Island’s Adult Correctional Institutions over the past forty years, a period in which the institutions underwent a radical transformation in response to changes in their external environment. Looking back over this transformation, it can be seen as having proceeded through five distinct stages: patriarchy, anarchy, restoration, threat and consolidation.
