ABSTRACT
U.S. writer and performer Assotto Saint was born Yves Lubin in Haiti and emigrated to New York City in 1970 to be with his mother, who had moved there. He attended Queen’s College but left to pursue his interests in dance and theater. In the early 1980s he established himself as one of the founding members of the gay black men’s writing collective Other Countries, serving as poetry editor of their anthology Other Countries: Black Gay Voices. Saint quickly became one of the best-known figures in the gay black scene and, because of his appearances in Marlon Riggs’s landmark documentaries on black gay life, one of the best-known gay black figures in the country.
