ABSTRACT
The state of early papal authority was often very dependent on the support of kings and emperors. This meant that even though the basis of Christian doctrine was essentially agreed upon through the decisions of councils and decrees from the pope, there was often ambiguity in interpreting and a general inability by the pope to settle disagreements.
