ABSTRACT
Drag balls are a combination of masked balls, theatrical performance, and fashion show in which cross-dressing plays an integral role. They are masked balls that have been assimilated into gay subculture. Drag balls, like their earlier incarnation, the masked ball, allow for an obscuring of identity. The primary difference between the two is that masked balls were traditionally assumed to be for heterosexual audiences, whereas drag balls were not.
