ABSTRACT
The second son of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, Philippe, at the accession of his brother Louis XIV in 1643, was given the title Monsieur. In 1661 he wed Henriette-Anne of England, and a year after her death under mysterious circumstances in 1670 he took as his second wife the prolific writer of letters, Charlotte Elizabeth of Bavaria, Princess Palatine.
