ABSTRACT

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is the national organization formed in the United States in 1981, although smaller, regional support groups for parents had been forming for at least two years prior to that time. Jeanne Manford, who marched in 1972 with her son Morty, formed the first support group in New York City. Soon after, she helped Adele and Larry Starr form a similar group in Los Angeles. Now PFLAG has 389 affiliates nationwide with 55,000 member households, located in more than 390 communities in the United States, as well as in 11 countries outside the United States.
