ABSTRACT
Human relationships occur as humans interact with one another within historical, material, and cultural conditions. The form that these relationships take is greatly influenced by the beliefs and ideologies present in the society in which they form. Throughout various periods of history, dominant beliefs and ideologies have accommodated, prohibited, encouraged, or tolerated intimate “gay” relationships between men resulting in three different forms: age-differentiated, status-differentiated, or egalitarian relationships.
