ABSTRACT

At an international level, there have been various assertions to the effect that humans have a right to a healthy or decent environment. In 1972, the Stockholm UN Conference on the Human Environment resolved in Principle 1 that: ‘Man has a fundamental right to freedom, equality and adequate conditions of life, in an environment of quality that permits a life of dignity and well being, and he bears a solemn responsibility to protect and improve the environment for present and future generations.’
