ABSTRACT

When I first started teaching my course in multicultural American literature, I naturally assumed that Jessica Hagedorn’s lyrical, comical, wonderful Dogeaters would be the assigned text. When Diane Rosenblum and I questioned our Filipino advisors, however— critics who have a quarter century of experience with Asian Pacific American literature, and who supervise all Filipino materials in this book—they informed us that the book they themselves assigned was the American Book Award—winning Cebu by Filipino novelist Peter Bacho, then unknown to Diane and me. They admired Hagedorn. Everyone does. But they raised interesting pedagogical questions.
