ABSTRACT

The emergence of the body as a focus for the study of culture, power, and resistance is demonstrated in the abundant writing on the subject currently in circulation. It is apparent that much of what has been said is more in the way of a metareflection on the importance of recognizing the nature of the postmodern body; understanding how it is inscribed by culture, mediates power, and expresses resistance to the normalizing practices of the society. What is rarely found in such work is a pedagogy where the body/subject as a lived medium becomes part of the curriculum. It is precisely this concern that is central to this book and addressed in this chapter.
