ABSTRACT

A. Philip Randolph Institute Founded in the spring of 1965 by the labor leader A. Philip Randolph and the civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, the A.

Philip Randolph Institute was organized to strengthen the alliances between African Americans and progressive organizations, especially labor unions. Supported by a $25,000 grant from the Industrial Union Department of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the institute established its headquarters in Harlem at 217 West 125th Street, in the same building occupied by Randolph’s union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
