RILM ABSTRACT (citation unverified): Copland’s three major piano works-the Variations (1930) Sonata (1939-1941), and Piano Fantasy (1955-1957)—share a structural property that may be called symbolic form. Analytic discussion of the works leads to speculation on the origin of conscious formal construction and the definition of style.
