ABSTRACT
The GP sees so many patients with coughs, colds and chest infections that it is virtually impossible to remember to consider endocarditis without a high index of suspicion. Most GPs will know their patients well and, if there is any possibility of valvular heart disease, will treat them accordingly. Some patients, however, are temporary residents and others will have seldom visited their doctor, so that their past history may not be entirely clear.
