ABSTRACT

Because ACE inhibitors have been shown to improve life expectancy in patients with heart failure of this nature, it is usual for them to be prescribed provided the blood pressure is not too low. Occasionally beta-blockers can be used. By slowing the heart rate, they allow a longer filling time of the left ventricle which results in better cardiac output. However, they must be used with great caution or they may cause, or worsen, heart failure. Most patients with cardiomyopathies will probably have a 24 hour ECG tape recording. If this demonstrates arrhythmias, an anti-arrhythmic agent may be needed long term.
