ABSTRACT

An underactive thyroid will result in a slow pulse, low blood pressure and raised cholesterol which will cause early coronary artery disease. The ECG is normally low voltage and characteristic.

Hyperthyroidism causes the heart to race and the patient may develop atrial fibrillation. In Cushing’s disease there is an excessive production of steroids, resulting in high blood pressure and congestive cardiac failure. Addison’s disease is a lack of steroids within the body and causes a very low blood pressure with syncope due to postural hypotension.
