ABSTRACT

Where the ectopic beats are not associated with heart disease there is usually no necessity for medical treatment. There is no increased mortality from ectopic beats and the beats will not ‘wear out’ the heart. With strong reassurance, the patient may well find the sensation of ectopic beats will disappear. Once the brain has got used to the concept of ectopic beats it will tend to ignore them rather like when one wears a hat; one is conscious of the presence of it for the first few minutes and then forgets about it altogether.
