ABSTRACT

The current ability of surgeons to operate on congenital heart disease is remarkable, although it is fair to say that mortality under the age of six months remains high. If an operation can be postponed until the child is older it is sensible to do so. An ASD or VSD for example can often be closed when a child is five to 10 years old. Nevertheless, major reconstructive surgery correcting tetralogy of Fallot is certainly possible in young children and has a high degree of success.
