ABSTRACT
Magistrates are principally concerned with the administration of the criminal law; however, they have an extensive civil jurisdiction, particularly in the realm of family law.
Although there are up to 100 professional lawyers who earn their living as stipendiary magistrates, the magistracy is composed predominantly of unpaid volunteers who have no legal qualifications.
