The pre-auricular sinus is another developmental abnormality caused by failure of fusion of the elements making up the normal ear. Although there are variants whose openings occur in different sites (including the neck), the usual fistula has its opening directly in front of the pinna, in relation to the root of the helix (Figure 14).
