ABSTRACT
Sudden loss of hearing of sensorineural type occurs in a small proportion of individuals. Fortunately, only one ear is affected in most cases. A long list of possible causes exists, but it is generally agreed that the majority of cases are of unknown origin (idiopathic). It has been estimated that the incidence of idiopathic, sudden hearing loss is about seven cases per 100,000 per year.
