ABSTRACT

The nasal septum is composed of bone and cartilage (Chapter 30). Although it is theoretically a mid-line structure, in practice it is often deflected and deviated so as to cause troublesome nasal obstruction. The nasal obstruction may lead to sinusitis if the middle meatus of the nose is blocked by a sharp angulation or spur. Correction of a deviated nasal septum is a common surgical procedure.
