ABSTRACT
Educator, philosopher, and political activist in late Qing China, Kang Youwei was best known for his advocacy of institutional reform, which culminated in the Hundred Days Reform of 1898. In his syncretic analyses of the Confucian philosophical heritage and in his patriotic political activism, Kang may be regarded as the founder of modern Chinese nationalism.
