ABSTRACT

Following the collapse of the first United Front in 1927, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched a series of unsuccessful armed uprisings against the Guomindang (GMD), and by 1928 had established Red Army bases in the Middle Yangtze region. As soon as the GMD consolidated its position as the national government, and Chiang Kaishek stabilized his leadership in the GMD, the GMD turned its attention to the residual Communist forces.
