Prescribing is a core task in general practice, and the GP will spend a large amount of NHS money with his pen, typically in the region of £65 for each patient on his list each year, or £70,000 per GP per year. The total expenditure on drugs in real terms almost doubled from £240 million in 1964 to £413 million in 1987.
