ABSTRACT

Cities in Africa have grown explosively since World War II, propelled by growing commercial, government, and industrial employment and by an even larger tide of people waiting for the elusive job. Between 1950 and 1980, Lagos grew from 250,000 people to 3 million; Kinshasa, from 220,000 people to 2.7 million; and Nairobi, from 130,000 to 900,000.
